Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Orthodontist?
Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to additional full-time university-based education in an accredited orthodontic residency program supervised by orthodontists. That training lasts at least two to three academic years - sometimes more. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely educated experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws.
Orthodontists diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists limit their practices to orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. That means that orthodontic treatment is what they do, and that is all they do. Orthodontists treat a wide variety of malocclusions (misaligned teeth and/or jaws). They regularly treat young children, teens and adults.
Selecting a registered orthodontist is your assurance that you have chosen a dental specialist with at least two to three years of post-doctoral, advanced specialty education in orthodontics in a university-based program accredited by the Dental Board of Australia.
What happens on my first visit?
This is a time for orthodontists to listen to patient concerns and to provide an orthodontic examination. Dr. Wong will be able to indicate whether or not treatment is needed and if needed, when the best time to start treatment would be. Typical steps prior to beginning treatment include gathering orthodontic records to provide specific information to tailor a treatment plan for that patient.
At this time Dr. Wong and staff will discuss treatment and payment options.

FAQ about Lingual Braces
What age groups can benefit from lingual orthodontics?
Age is not a factor, however it may be more difficult to apply the braces on very small teeth. Our current patients with lingual braces range from 13 to 61 years of age.
How long is the treatment?
This can only be determined by the orthodontist, based on the complexity of the problem. Usually it takes between 6 to 24 months.
How often will I need to visit the orthodontist during treatment?
Since the advent of high technology appliances, patients need only come in once every 4-10 weeks.
Does it hurt?
Like traditional braces, it may be uncomfortable for the first several days. Orthodontic wax, over-the-counter pain relief tablets and a soft diet will help through this period.
Is it difficult to clean my teeth with the braces?
More time and care are required while wearing any type of braces, but Lingual braces have actually proven safer, since the inside of teeth is more resistant to decalcification.
Will my teeth move after the braces are removed?
You will receive a personal retention plan to help you protect your beautiful smile!
Is Dr Wong experienced in other types of treatment?
Most certainly! Inquire about traditional metal and clear braces, or clear aligners! Dr. Wong uses a wide variety of orthodontic appliances to achieve optimum results.
How much does it cost?
Cost will depend on time and complexity, but we are committed to making lingual orthodontics affordable for everyone. Interest-free payment plans are available. View braces cost comparison.
